Synopsis

When Irie was five, her mother casually promised her in marriage to the eleven-year-old son of a close friend. Irie and Kangee grew up together until his family moved abroad, turning the childish arrangement into a distant memory. Ten years later they reunite at twenty-two and eighteen, now old enough to question the promise and discover how differently they remember their bond, their families, and each other.

Story profile
★ My Take

Four Years Apart approaches its arranged childhood promise as a source of awkwardness rather than instant destiny. Irie and Kangee have shared history but little adult familiarity, so the romance develops through disagreements about maturity, expectations, and what their families decided for them. The comedy is strongest when their contrasting habits collide in ordinary life, and the slice-of-life pace gives secondary relationships room to breathe. The age gap and original betrothal remain inherently unusual, and the series does not interrogate every implication as deeply as some readers may want. Still, it offers a complete, character-focused romance with more everyday texture than high-drama plotting.

✓ Why you'd like it

The leads must build a present-day relationship instead of relying on childhood memories to do the emotional work. Their four-year difference affects communication and life stage without turning the story into a large power fantasy. Readers who prefer domestic comedy and gradual adjustment over villains or supernatural conflict may find it refreshing.

⚠ What may not be for everyone

The childhood betrothal and the leads' ages at reunion can be uncomfortable, even though the story focuses on their adult choices. Its low-key conflicts and domestic rhythm may also feel slight to readers expecting major twists, intense angst, or a more critical examination of family pressure.
