Synopsis

In 1835 France, Rose Dupre grows up under rumors that her absent mother is a witch. Her friends Pierre and Marie reject the village’s cruelty, but unexplained deaths bring fear and suspicion to Rose’s door. What begins as a pastoral childhood mystery expands across decades into a gothic history of witches, hunters, immortality, and destructive love. As identities and loyalties shift, Rose must confront what she is and whether affection can survive the hunger surrounding her.

Story profile
★ My Take

The Pale Horse is visually extravagant, narratively fearless, and often emotionally punishing. Hye-yeon Chu’s evolving art turns European gothic imagery into something luminous and grotesque, while the long structure repeatedly reframes its central relationships. It can meander and deliberately frustrate romantic expectations, yet few webtoons match its atmosphere or tragic scale.

✓ Why you'd like it

The series rewards readers who enjoy watching an innocent-looking fairy tale transform into a vast moral nightmare. Its beauty is not decoration; color, costume, and composition continually sharpen the story’s themes of appetite and decay.

⚠ What may not be for everyone

At 284 chapters, the story demands patience through time jumps, shifting perspectives, and deeply self-destructive characters. The romance is tragic and frequently toxic, while the ending is more haunting than reassuring.
