Synopsis

Hyejin begins university expecting independence and a clean start, only to discover that Haejun—her first love and the boyfriend she abruptly left five years earlier—lives next door and attends the same school. Neither has a reliable understanding of why their young relationship failed, and their reunion is complicated by new friends, potential partners, and the opinions circulating around campus. Hyejin wants to become more certain about what she feels instead of reacting to what others expect. Rebuilding any connection with Haejun requires both of them to separate old embarrassment and rumor from the choices they are willing to make now.

Story profile
★ My Take

Rumor Has It keeps its college romance grounded in ordinary uncertainty. Hyejin is not solving a dramatic betrayal; she is learning how easily fear, assumptions, and outside opinions can steer a relationship. The neighbor setup creates natural encounters, while the friend group gives both leads lives beyond their history. Their awkwardness feels believable because neither returns as the fully confident adult the other once needed. The art is simple and expressive, matching a story more interested in conversations and social atmosphere than visual spectacle. Some misunderstandings could be resolved sooner, and side romances receive uneven attention. Still, the compact completed run avoids the extreme escalation common in second-chance stories. Its appeal comes from watching young adults develop enough self-knowledge to revisit a first love without pretending the past was perfect.

✓ Why you'd like it

This is a manageable, completed read with recognizable college concerns: moving out, forming new friendships, dating under social scrutiny, and wondering whether old feelings are nostalgia or something durable. The exes-next-door premise supplies tension without requiring cruelty, and Hyejin's growth centers on confidence rather than transformation into an ideal heroine. Fans of conversational romance will appreciate its relaxed realism.

⚠ What may not be for everyone

The plot depends heavily on hesitation and misunderstanding, so readers who prefer direct communication may become impatient. Stakes remain personal and comparatively low, with little action or external drama. Some character decisions can feel immature even for college students, and the title's gossip theme is not explored as sharply as it could be. The gentle art may also look plain beside newer glossy webtoons.
