Synopsis

Shim Chong survives by begging while caring for her blind father. The future wife of the elderly Chancellor Jang has wealth but little more freedom, having been traded into marriage for her family's benefit. Their paths cross when Chong rescues the bride from a river, binding two women who had separately wished to escape their lives. Affection grows alongside suspicion and conflicting intentions, and together they begin resisting a social order designed to keep poor and married women powerless.

Story profile
★ My Take

Her Tale of Shim Chong transforms a familiar folktale into a forceful story about who gets sacrificed and who is permitted to choose. Seri's writing treats poverty, marriage, religion, and reputation as connected systems of control rather than decorative historical obstacles. Chong and the chancellor's wife do not instantly trust one another; their bond develops through bargains, setbacks, protection, and the gradual recognition of shared confinement. Biwan's art is especially effective with water, textiles, and expressions held behind formal composure, giving the romance both intimacy and scale. The suffering can be relentless, and antagonists sometimes embody patriarchal cruelty more than psychological nuance. Yet the series earns its emotional intensity through careful character work and a relationship in which survival becomes a genuinely mutual project.

✓ Why you'd like it

This is historical romance with real thematic weight. The leads bridge a severe class divide without erasing it, and their growing loyalty changes how each understands freedom. Folklore imagery, political and domestic danger, and beautifully controlled visual symbolism create a story that feels tragic in scope while remaining anchored in two women's specific choices.

⚠ What may not be for everyone

The story depicts sustained misogyny, poverty, forced marriage, family abuse, suicidal despair, and violence, so it is emotionally heavy despite its ultimately meaningful romance. Readers seeking frequent fluff or a low-conflict couple may find the long periods of danger and social powerlessness difficult.
