Synopsis

In Japanese-occupied Korea in 1926, seventeen-year-old servant Su-a Heo rescues the wounded independence fighter Uihyeon Kang. After an attempted murder leaves her unable to speak, she travels to Gyeongseong searching for him and becomes entangled with a resistance cell whose ideals, secrets, and sacrifices transform her life.

Story profile
★ My Take

Na Yoonhee turns The Little Mermaid into a sweeping portrait of people struggling to choose love, freedom, and dignity under colonial rule. The painterly art and recurring sea imagery are stunning, but the historical details and conflicting ideals give the tragedy its force. The romance is deliberately constrained by politics and unequal power, and the story offers no easy comfort; that uncompromising approach is precisely why its ending lands so hard.

✓ Why you'd like it

It pairs breathtaking art and fairy-tale symbolism with a mature, politically grounded story about resistance, sacrifice, and voices history tried to silence.

⚠ What may not be for everyone

This is a true tragedy rather than a conventional romance: it is slow, politically dense, emotionally devastating, and unsparing about colonial violence.
