Synopsis

Clarisse survives the destruction of her royal family only to become Duke Maximilian Sheridan's youngest prisoner. Her sentence allows her to live until eighteen, when she is meant to be executed. Taken to a cold northern castle, she finds unexpected kindness among people who were supposed to be her captors. As friendships form and strange abilities emerge, the household's growing affection clashes with the legal fate that still hangs over the little girl's future.

Story profile
★ My Take

The contradiction at the center is effective: Clarisse is treated as a prisoner on paper while gradually becoming precious to the people around her. Her cheerful responses to a grim situation make the tender scenes bittersweet rather than simply sugary. The developing parental figures and unusual magic are strong reasons to stay. The childhood focus is substantial, so approach it primarily as a family story with later romantic possibilities.

✓ Why you'd like it

The adults have room to change alongside the child, which makes the household feel like a relationship being built rather than a ready-made reward. Clarisse's unusual friendships also give the castle personality, bringing warmth to a setting defined by confinement and duty.

⚠ What may not be for everyone

The threatened execution of a child remains a serious underlying concern, even during cute domestic scenes. Progress toward resolving that danger is gradual. Anyone expecting a straightforward father-daughter adoption story may find the legal and political complications more unsettling than anticipated.
