Synopsis

Theodore Miller understands magical theory but lacks the talent to cast it, leaving him on the verge of failing Berghen Academy. His fate changes when he bonds with Gluttony, a living grimoire that consumes magical books and artifacts, transferring their knowledge and power to him while threatening to devour its host if it is not fed.

Story profile
★ My Take

Book Eater turns a simple devouring ability into a very readable progression fantasy because Theo still has to understand and apply what Gluttony gives him. His rise from academic failure to capable magician is satisfying, the spell battles are clear, and the supporting cast contributes meaningfully. It is familiar rather than revolutionary, but it executes the fantasy-academy formula with confidence.

✓ Why you'd like it

The appeal is immediate: a hardworking underdog can literally consume magical knowledge, yet his growth still feels earned through study and combat experience. Readers also praise the steady pacing, useful companions, and the way Gluttony's risks keep an otherwise convenient power from feeling completely free.

⚠ What may not be for everyone

The academy setup and power-copying progression use familiar genre beats, and readers sensitive to harem developments may dislike the romantic direction inherited from the novel. The comic also stops after its second season with a long unresolved hiatus, so there is no current manhwa conclusion.
