Synopsis

On her deathbed, Ersella regrets the distance between herself and her son, Vicente. Sent back three years, she tries to become the mother she wishes she had been, but her teenage son cannot simply forget years of neglect. Her attempts to reconnect also force her to examine the lonely marriage and emotional struggles that shaped their household. As family tensions intersect with aristocratic politics, Ersella discovers that repairing the past requires understanding it, not merely behaving differently.

Story profile
★ My Take

This stands out because a second chance does not instantly make Ersella a better mother. Vicente’s guarded reactions and her tendency to slip into old patterns make their repair feel painfully believable. The emotional writing is its strongest feature, although the suffocating marriage and slow progress can make it a demanding read rather than a comforting family story.

✓ Why you'd like it

The mother and son both have emotional lives that matter, so an awkward conversation can feel as consequential as a major confrontation. Watching affection struggle to reach someone who has stopped expecting it gives the family scenes their particular tenderness and tension.

⚠ What may not be for everyone

The story deals with depression, maternal guilt, and emotional neglect in a sustained way. Its aristocratic marriage can feel claustrophobic, and progress often involves setbacks. Readers wanting an uncomplicated redemption or a cheerful child-raising story may find it distressing.
