Synopsis

When Julia loses part of her scholarship, she cannot afford to refuse her eccentric lab partner Ryn's proposal: pretend to be Ryn's girlfriend during a visit to her wealthy family. The arrangement promises money but demands close quarters, family performances, and constant improvisation. As Julia tries to survive Ryn's relatives and their class assumptions, the fake relationship begins revealing real compatibility—and feelings neither student included in the project plan.

Story profile
★ My Take

The Girlfriend Project understands the reliable pleasures of fake dating and delivers them with nerdy humor, holiday discomfort, and an appealing contrast between practical Julia and unpredictable Ryn. The family visit gives the romance a clear structure while allowing class tension to matter beyond a single misunderstanding. Sahyu's bright art suits the comedy, and the leads' growing comfort is easy to root for. At fifty episodes, the series moves briskly, sometimes too briskly: family antagonism and financial stakes can resolve with less complexity than their setup suggests, and some jokes announce themselves loudly. Still, the compact length prevents the premise from stagnating. It is a cheerful, accessible completed GL rom-com with enough emotional sincerity beneath the chaos.

✓ Why you'd like it

The fake-girlfriend arrangement creates built-in closeness, public performance, and private confusion without requiring a sprawling plot. Julia's financial practicality gives the trope a concrete reason, while Ryn's unusual personality keeps familiar beats lively. The result is a low-commitment, completed read with genuine queer humor and satisfying romantic progression.

⚠ What may not be for everyone

The comedy is broad and occasionally relies on secondhand embarrassment. Wealth and class conflict are introduced more sharply than they are ultimately resolved, and the short run compresses some family development. Readers wanting subtle realism or a very slow burn may find the emotional turns too tidy.
