Synopsis

Peony is reborn as a princess inside The Song of Askar, the romance novel she loved in her previous life. Rather than pursue the victorious male lead, she travels to the harsh northern territory where Richt—the story's rejected second male lead and former prince—has been exiled. Peony arrives with a direct proposal and enormous confidence that affection can give him the happy ending the novel denied him. Richt is suspicious, isolated, and unwilling to become anyone's consolation prize. Winning his trust requires Peony to understand the real man beyond her fan devotion while surviving political pressure and the physical dangers of his neglected domain.

Story profile
★ My Take

Happily Ever Afterwards understands the fantasy of rescuing a beloved second male lead, then gently questions what that fantasy asks of the person being rescued. Peony begins with the certainty of a fan who thinks she knows Richt's heart. Her optimism is funny and endearing, but the romance improves when she learns that devotion does not entitle her to immediate trust. Richt's gradual softening feels satisfying because his reserve is connected to betrayal and displacement rather than simple coldness. Jeongseo's rounded, expressive art supports the lighter tone while still giving the wintry setting emotional weight. The plot is straightforward and occasionally relies on familiar misunderstandings, yet the completed length prevents the court conflict from overwhelming the couple. Peony can be impulsive, and some readers may find her pursuit too forceful early on. Even so, the story delivers a warm post-ending romance in which both leads must stop treating Richt's old narrative role as his permanent identity.

✓ Why you'd like it

The central pleasure is watching admiration mature into a relationship between equals. Peony brings color and energy into Richt's isolated life, while Richt's practical care gives her enthusiasm a steadier foundation. Their size and temperament contrast produces effective comedy, and the northern setting creates plenty of forced proximity. It is especially appealing to readers who want a completed, relatively comforting romance with emotional healing and a heroine who openly chooses the overlooked man.

⚠ What may not be for everyone

Peony ignores several boundaries during the opening courtship, which may feel more intrusive than charming. The political plot and antagonists are simpler than the romance, and the series sometimes resolves danger quickly to preserve its buoyant tone. Readers who dislike persistent-heroines-melt-cold-men dynamics may struggle with the setup. Its sweetness also means it offers less moral ambiguity than darker second-lead recovery stories.
