Synopsis

A modern college student wakes inside her favorite romance novel as Ripley, a wealthy extra who should have no effect on the plot. She plans to enjoy noble life while cheering from the sidelines for the destined heroine and Duke Zeronis. One drunken celebration ruins that plan when Ripley wakes beside the duke and discovers that he considers their night the beginning of a serious relationship. Her increasingly desperate efforts to restore the original romance only make Zeronis more determined, while the novel's villainess and court politics turn the situation dangerous. Ripley must decide whether preserving the story matters more than the life and feelings she now possesses.

Story profile
★ My Take

The First Night With the Duke is at its best as a loud, self-aware romantic comedy. Ripley is not a cool strategist; she panics, improvises terrible plans, and regularly creates the exact outcome she hoped to avoid. MSG's expressive art amplifies the humor, while the costumes and interiors give the series the polished fantasy-romance look readers expect. The completed format also allows the relationship to move through attraction, conflict, and commitment rather than ending at the first confession. The central romance is more divisive. Zeronis is handsome and protective, but he is also possessive and frequently ignores Ripley's attempts to create distance. The opening night carries consent concerns because Ripley is intoxicated, and later jealousy is often framed as proof of devotion. Readers comfortable with heightened, old-school possessive romance may enjoy the intensity; others may find it difficult to accept even within the comic tone. Beneath that issue, the series has a worthwhile idea about an “extra” recognizing that her new life is not disposable simply because a novel once assigned her a minor role.

✓ Why you'd like it

This works well as a binge because the misunderstandings produce immediate comedy while the completed story still delivers escalating stakes and a firm ending. Ripley's refusal to behave like a flawless isekai heroine makes her memorable, and the narrative has fun with the damage a single unscripted night can do to a supposedly fixed plot. Readers who enjoy assertive dukes, elaborate gowns, jealous confrontations, and heroines who fail upward will find a great deal of entertaining momentum.

⚠ What may not be for everyone

The possessive romance is not merely decorative. Zeronis can be coercive, jealous, and dismissive of boundaries, while the intoxicated opening makes the foundation uncomfortable for some readers. Ripley's repeated schemes and impulsive decisions may also become frustrating once the same comedy pattern has been established. Anyone wanting careful political worldbuilding or a highly competent heroine should expect romance and farce to take priority. The story treats several troubling behaviors lightly, so readers sensitive to dubious consent should approach it cautiously.
